Those Dreaded Words!

What are the odds that both sisters in one family would hear the dreaded words: breast cancer? Susan was diagnosed first.

"Nancy?" called Susan... "Promise me... promise me that you will do everything you can to get rid of this disease... Promise me that I won't die in vain. Help the others who still live."

That was the wish of Susan Koman.

"My sister was a 33-year-old beautiful young woman who was literally scared to death." said Nancy in a television interview.

Susan died in 1980 and on her death bed, Nancy promised to do everything in her power to find not only a cure for breast cancer but to make reality her sister's wish of a cancer free world!
Pink Ribbon

In 1982, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure was born. Nancy took seriously her promise to her only sister and since then the organization has raised nearly 1 BILLION dollars!!

Obviously Nancy is not your ordinary fund raiser! She has been in a very unique position to influence major donors, political figures and even Heads of State. You see, Nancy has served under several United States presidents in various capacities from an appointment to the National Cancer Advisory Board under Former President Reagan to being named Chief of Protocol of the United States under President George W. Bush.

The Koman Race for the Cure, too has grown under Nancy's leadership... from a race in Dallas, TX U.S.A. with about 800 participants, to a series of races covering more than 100 cities with 1 million people. Everything she touches seems to prosper. But you know, she is not just fulfilling the wish of her sister... she is also living the life of a cancer survivor.

You see, Nancy was also diagnosed with breast cancer just 4 years after Susan's death. So the race for the cure is also a race for a personal cure.

Brinker says in the same interview, "I am beginning to see, as are others, a time when we can turn this disease into a manageable chronic disease. So, if a woman and man are diagnosed, it doesn't have to feel a death threat."

Being cancer free now for over 20 years, Nancy knows the fears and hopes of each woman and family member she meets with. Personable and approachable, Nancy is at ease with everyone... from her political comrades to the stranger in the store.

One day Nancy will be able to greet her sister and tell her she did what she said she would do... she raised national and world-wide awareness and millions of dollars to rid the world of breast cancer.

What would you do if your sister asked you to help others as she lay dying?

Would you try to forget the promise?

Would you take it seriously and give it all you had?

What would you do if you, too, were diagnosed with the SAME disease?

I hope you take courage and hope from Nancy and Susan's lives... their life connection that lives today.

Next time, you see that familiar pink ribbon, remember the 2 sisters that together battle cancer!

It doesn't matter if you don't have billions of dollars or 100,000 volunteers for your favorite organization... It doesn't matter if you are not acquainted with the President of the United States... What does matter is that you live your life with purpose... with passion. Nancy lives each day knowing her sister would be proud of her.

I challenge you to live like that. Find that cause to lose yourself in. Take Susan's courage and make it your own. Take Nancy's strength and embrace it. You can... just like they did... because…

Wild Child

Hello!

His parents were too busy running their tavern and basically ignored their son. To cover his unhappiness, George took advantage of every opportunity to cause trouble. He stole, skipped school, chewed tobacco, and drank whiskey – all before he was 7 years old.

It was the police who finally got the parents to pay attention to their son. Their response to the problem was to place their son in a reformatory/orphanage – and rarely saw him again. George, unable to adapt to the strict regulations of St. Mary's Industrial School for boys, was quickly classified as incorrigible. It was probably the nicest thing they could say.

Until… one man saw promise within the boy and introduced him to the game of baseball.

Whether you're a baseball fan or not – everyone knows the name Babe Ruth. The very name draws up the image of homeruns.

When you learn more about him the name also conjures images of drinking bouts, devoured hot dogs, partying and carousing. Babe Ruth never gave up his wild ways; he simply found a way to channel some of them doing what he loved to do – play baseball.

He actually began his march to fame as a pitcher – setting many records for his prowess on the mound with the Boston Red Sox. His famed pitching, and impressive hitting, wasn't enough though… the Boston Red Sox owner, needing money to finance his dreams of Broadway, sold the Babe to the New York Yankees. It was another in a long line of rejections the Babe had experienced.

Baseball and BatHe could have let his bitterness stop his life and halt his drive to success and fame. He made a different choice. He kept playing. He kept swinging. He kept doing what he loved. He played baseball.

His ability to hit homeruns exploded. He became famous. He created homerun records that stood for decades. He smiled, laughed, lived life to the fullest – and he kept on swinging.

Here's the thing most people don't talk about. While it's true he hit more homeruns than anyone else; it's also true that he struck out more times than anyone. He only hit a homerun, on average, every 11 times at bat. He failed more times than he succeeded. Did you get that?

He failed more times than he succeeded!

Yet he went on to become an American icon; loved by millions; a household name.

Why? Because he chose to keep swinging! A strike out. A walk. A single. They were all necessary to get him to the next homerun. He kept swinging.

As I have studied the lives of successful people I have seen this truth. Most have failed more times then they have succeeded. Yet they choose to keep swinging until they finally connect with the right thing: the right business; the right relationship; the right way to do something. They learn from every failure and jump right back into the game.

Have you failed at something? More than one something? Great! Stay in the game. Keep swinging. You'll finally connect. You'll find that right thing; you'll meet that right person; you'll discover the right way. The only way you can fail is if you put the bat down and choose to stop swinging. You can choose today to decide to keep swinging because…

Every Step Matters

Hello!

It's been said that if Lance's story were written as a movie, it would be dismissed as "trite melodrama."

But here's the truth. A deadly disease struck a successful athlete. Despite desperately thin odds, he managed to not only beat the cancer, but to return to the sport he loved and win its most coveted prize. But the beauty of Lance's story is that it doesn't end on the finish line of the Tour de France. His life has taken on new meaning and his website says: "No matter what his path, he will travel it with sure knowledge that every day is precious and that every step matters."

Lance was always athletic and competitive and his mother was one of his greatest supporters. At age 13 he won the Iron Kids Triathlon and became a professional athlete when he was only 16 years old. It nearly cost him his high school diploma as he trained with the U.S. Olympic cycling developmental team in Colorado Springs his senior year.
Bicycle Racing

Lance's rise in the amateur ranks was seemingly effortless and he qualified for the junior world championships in Moscow in 1989. By 1991 he was the U.S. National Amateur Champion and soon afterward turned professional.

Once in the professional realm, Lance would become the number 1 ranked cyclist with a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. But seeming tragedy struck while at the top of his game. In excruciating pain, Lance was forced to stop riding. In early October of 1996 he was given the devastating news that he had cancer.

In that moment, Lance's life changed forever. Tests showed his advanced cancer had spread to his lungs and brain and his chances for recovery were far less than 50-50. Scared to death but determined, Lance started an aggressive form of chemotherapy. It worked, and his thoughts slowly returned to racing.

Even though the cancer had left him scarred physically and emotionally, Lance says it ". . . was the best thing that ever happened to me." His new perspective on life pushed him beyond racing to embrace the cancer community. He started the Lance Armstrong Foundation within months of his diagnosis to help others with the struggles they would face with this devastating disease.

As you probably already know, Lance went on to win the Tour de France in 1999 and became an international hero to both the racing world and the cancer community! He went on to win six more Tour de France titles and has been awarded nearly every sports honor there is. Lance Armstrong has become a symbol of hope, determination and inspiration!

I hope it won't take a crisis like Lance Armstrong's for you to embrace life with a grateful heart. I hope that regardless of the struggles you may be facing today, in your heart-of-hearts, you too can say "every day is precious and every step matters."

As you live today...take a moment to reflect on this gift and know that with each step you take…

"BE The Difference Club"

HI,

I read a true story about a man who lives on a two-square-mile island in Indonesia who wanted to attend a friend's wedding in the U.S. He left on a Saturday, swam to a coral reef off his island and flagged down a fishing boat. The fisherman took him to an ocean-going barge which carried him to a ferry. From the ferry he got to Jakarta (Java) where he booked a flight to Singapore. From Singapore he flew to London, then Minneapolis and finally to Memphis, Tennessee. Upon arriving at the airport in Memphis, he called a "bewildered friend" who jumped in his car and headed to the airport for an unexpected reunion.

The traveler had shown up for each flight without a ticket or luggage and purchased a change of clothes once he arrived in Florence, Alabama for the wedding.

Whew! That's what I call determination!

This is such a great story because it reminds us of several things. One, relationships are worth the effort they take! Two, every choice we make results in consequences. Three, compared to others most of us really have little to complain about. And four, determination pays off.

I hope you'll take a few minutes and consider how you're doing in those four areas: relationships, choices, gratitude and determination. These are four key components of our daily living and how we choose to treat them will control how we live. We can choose to live bitter lives of complaining and name-blaming, or we can choose to take charge of our lives, learn from our mistakes and live in gratitude, conviction and joy. It's always a choice and by choosing well, you will. . .

. . . make it a great year!

Sandi Valentine

Profile of the Week

Frustrated, Scott stops. He puts down the ink and reaches for the computer mouse. Turning on some music, he sighs. With a little patience, he knows he can make his deadline. But still, drawing and writing when your hands don't want to cooperate is hard.

Scott needs his hands every day to produce his livelihood and yet he never knows when they will fail. Without notice, they can suddenly twist and move on their own because he has a disorder called focal dystonia.

Maybe you've read DILBERT, the cartoon about a micromanaged U.S. business office with an engineer named Dilbert as the main guy. DILBERT appears in 2000 newspapers worldwide in over 60 countries and in multiple languages. However, few people realize how difficult it is for Scott Adams to continue to create.

A typical day might mean having to endure uncomfortable convulsions and spasm-like tremors. Scott has learned to "trick" his brain into working with his hands instead of against them. His body may betray him, but he knows that in order to continue his life's dream, he must be determined to never quit.

So, he and thousands like him, take injections or medications. But most importantly, Scott uses his mind-- his most powerful tool in overcoming his physical limits is his thoughts.

Scott had to decide that his art and drawing were worth the persistence it takes to produce it. Because he chooses to fight through his physical challenge, we know and love his goofy business comic strip with its quirky characters and humorous one-liners.

Tips & Tricks

Slicing With Dental Floss

Dental floss can be used to cut delicate or sticky cakes that tend to stick to the knife. Hold a length of floss tightly over the cake and slice away. Move it slightly side to side as you cut. You can also cut small blocks of cheese this way. Cookies that are sticking to the cookie sheet can be removed by sliding floss between the cookie and the sheet.

Carrots, Eggs & Coffee

Someone Belives In You

Hello!

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots. In the second she placed eggs. In the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee into a bowl.

All the time the daughter was looking at her as if she'd lost her mind.

Turning to her daughter, the mother asked, "Tell me what you see."

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

The mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted they were limp and soft. The mother then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, the daughter observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma, but was confused.

"What's the point, mother?"

Boiling Water"Daughter, each of these objects faced the same adversity - boiling water - but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. It came out soft and weak. The egg began fragile. Its thin outer shell protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. They actually changed the boiling water.”

She paused for a moment. “Which are you?" she finally asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

How would you answer that question?

Are you the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, wilts and becomes soft and you lose your strength? Are you the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did you begin with a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, did you become bitter, hardened and stiff? Or are you like the coffee bean? The bean actually changed the hot water, the very circumstance that brought the pain. When the water got hot, it released the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst you get better and change the situation around you.

How do YOU handle adversity?

ARE YOU A CARROT, AN EGG, OR A COFFEE BEAN?

If your life is boiling around you, I'm hoping you make a "coffee bean" choice, and release the sweet fragrance of your life into a world that so badly needs you! You can make that choice because…

Meet A Tiny Dynamo!

Hello!

Mary Lou Retton has a list of accomplishments that is impressive no matter who you are. . .

She is

1. the 1st American woman to win gold in gymnastics in the Olympics
2. 1st and only American ever (including today) to win the Olympic All Around Title
3. first female to appear on a Wheaties cereal box as well as the first female spokesperson for Wheaties plus scores of other achievements.

Mary Lou RettenAs extraordinary as all that is, it is encouraging to note that Mary Lou is not perfect. Her gymnastics scores were often times a "perfect 10." As a teenager, this petite powerhouse from West Virginia awed the multitudes in each of these gymnastic sporting events: Uneven Bars, Vault, Team and Floor Exercise. Yet as a baby she was born with a hip condition called hip dysplasia that required a hip replacement. Not only that but she has suffered with both an overactive bladder and arthritis. As part of her public persona as a sports celebrity, she admitted her problems and gave her support to the medications that combat these conditions.

Mary Lou battled competitors on the mat and her body off the mat. A severe wrist injury and knee surgery forced her to decide whether to quit her beloved gymnastics or try to overcome the injuries. Sitting on the sidelines was not where this dynamo wanted to be. She worked hard. She exercised. She did the strength training exercises. She sweated. She cried. But she did not give up. She kept on and on until one day she was back. She could participate again in the sport she loved and that loved her back. Mary Lou went on to be inducted into both the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame and the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

As an engaging public speaker Mary Lou tells audiences "to never give up on your dreams! Work hard!" She knows what it is to feel the applause of millions world wide and yet she understands the solitary agony of pain and rehabilitation.

Not knowing where you are today, I want to encourage you to think about your life story. How do you want it to read? You may not want to compete for the gold and hear the applause of millions. But even if your goal is more common than Mary Lou’s, I encourage you to keep at it until you get it. Never give up even if an injury or family situation has you sidelined. Use the down time to renew your vision, refresh your determination and revise your target. You can do it! And I hope you know that through all your life, no matter what comes your way…

Someone Believes In YOU!

Imagine Life Without These

Hello!

Imagine a world with no ATM Machines; no passbook savings; no car or home-improvement loans; or no installment-plan credit. Hard to do, isn’t it? Well, you owe a huge thanks to one man who refused to be told it couldn’t be done.

Most people want to know how to create success in their life. As a teenager, I know you’re thinking about what you are going to create with your life. I’m here to tell you that if you have a strong vision, and a will to overcome whatever obstacles get in your way, you can accomplish anything. Just ask Amadeo Peter Giannini (A.P.).

A.P. certainly had his share of obstacles. When he was only 7, his father died in a fight over one dollar. Things were hard for him and his mother. She remarried a man who went into the produce business. A.P., at age 14, quit school to work with him. By 19 he was a partner in the thriving enterprise, built largely on his reputation for integrity and honesty. At 31 years of age he had all the money he needed or wanted, and announced his retirement. One year later his real career began…

At 32, A.P. was asked to join the board of the Columbus Savings & Loan society, a modest bank in the Italian section of town. It wasn’t long before A.P found himself at odds with the other directors. A.P. wanted the bank to loan money to hard-working immigrants, but at that time banks were in business only for business men and the wealthy. His ideas of loaning money to the working class were scoffed at.

No problem. A.P. had a vision and he was determined to make it reality. He raised $150,000 (a massive amount of money then) from family and friends, bought a converted saloon right across the street from the Columbus S&L; kept the bartender on as an assistant teller; and opened the Bank of Italy.

In those days it wasn’t considered proper to solicit banking business. He ignored the “proper way” and began ringing doorbells and talking to everyone he could about what a bank did. He advertised. He kept the bank open longer hours, and on weekends, to fit into working people’s schedules. Business boomed.

A.P. believed in making other people’s dreams come true. He helped the California Wine Industry get started. He bankrolled Hollywood when they were trying to make movies popular. When Walt Disney ran $2 million dollars over budget on Snow White, he stepped in with a loan.

A.P. believed integrity and “giving back” were the formulas for success. What began in 1904 as the Bank of Italy transformed into the Bank of America – now the world’s largest bank.

What about A.P.? Did he die a billionaire? When he passed away at age 79, his estate was worth less than $500,000. It was purely by choice. He disdained great wealth, believing it would make him lose touch with the people he wanted to serve. He worked for no pay for years. A surprise $1.5 million bonus one year was promptly given to the University of California. It was far more important for him to give and make a difference.

All of us have that ability and opportunity. As you strive for success, remember you can use it to make a difference in the world. A.P. strove to make a difference every day of his life. Follow your own formula for success, then look for ways to give back to the world that has given you so much.

There are always ways. They are out there waiting for you to find them!

Sharing this with you, because…

He Did The Impossible!

Hello!

Everyone knew it couldn’t be done.

Roger Bannister had no real motivation to prove them wrong. The young Englishman loved to run but from the time he was a child he also had a passion to be a doctor. This was the passion that drove him. His parents were unable to afford a University education so it was up to him to make it happen.

He knew early on that to achieve his dream of being a doctor he would have to be exceptional – so he set about being exceptional. His studies were paramount but that didn’t mean he couldn’t improve his track skills by running to and from school. While he was on his way to earning a scholarship from Oxford University, he was also gaining a name for himself as a runner.

“It is physically impossible for a human being to run a mile in under 4 minutes.” This statement was the accepted wisdom of the time during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. Runners tried, but failed, proving the words of athletes and medical doctors – cementing a belief in runners minds that it couldn’t be done.

Roger didn’t set out to prove them wrong. He simply loved to run and he was fast. He was also learning a lot about the human body in his studies at Oxford. The day arrived when he was firmly convinced it WAS possible for a human being to run the mile in under 4 minutes.

His decision to be that person was formed by a humiliating defeat in the 1952 Olympics. In order to redeem himself he decided to break the world’s record for the mile. No one believed he could do it.

Adding to his challenge was the fact he was now a full-time Medical student and he could devote only 45 minutes a day to training. People scoffed at the idea he could accomplish such a wild goal but Roger believed slow and steady training would allow him to break the record. He painstakingly researched mechanical aspects of running, and developed scientific training methods to help him achieve his goal.

His opportunity came 2 years later – on a blustery day with 25 MPH gusts of wind to hamper his efforts. It didn’t look promising. So what? He had trained. He was ready. He believed it could be done.

So he simply went out and did it. Roger ran the race of his life, breaking the tape and collapsing as the announcer delivered his time to a wildly cheering crowd:

3:59.4

Within two months his record had been broken by John Landy – proving the 4 minute mile was as much a psychological barrier as it was a physical barrier. As the years have passed the mile has been run in shorter and shorter times but it was Roger Bannister who proved the body was capable of far more than people believed.

When he was asked to explain that first four-minute mile – and the art of record breaking – his answer was simple: “It’s the ability to take more out of yourself than you’ve got.”

Did you get that?

“It’s the ability to take more out of yourself than you’ve got.”

How did Roger do it? First, he BELIEVED he could do it. He understood the size of his success would be determined by the size of his belief.

C:\Users\Owner\Pictures\Pictures\SBIY\Days 1 - 30\Roger Bannister.gif

Here is where I’m going to depart from some more common thoughts that are spread around a lot today. While belief is critically important – in fact, he couldn’t have accomplished what he did without it - belief alone is not enough. It is not enough to repeat affirmations over and over to yourself, even though they are important.

Roger Bannister - book coverAt some point you have to do the work. Roger Bannister ran day after day. He researched the human body. He created scientific methods to enable him to stretch his limits. He did what it would take to fulfill his dream.

What are your goals? What is it you dream of accomplishing? BELIEVE it can be done. Then do the work. Apply yourself to success. Apply yourself to excellence. Figure out what it is going to take and then go DO IT!

You may have no interest in breaking a world record, but I know you have an interest in being the best you that you can be – or you wouldn’t be reading all these letters. J

Give yourself the ability to take more out of yourself than you’ve got! I believe you can do it because…

Someone Believes In YOU!

And I do, too!

Purpose

Hello!

During the next several months you are going to meet a lot of incredible people (kids and adults) who simply refused to be denied what they wanted. They all have one thing in common – they all were clear on their purpose.

Purpose. So many people struggle to know what theirs is. Purpose is the why – why you are here. It’s knowing what your special calling in life is. Your purpose is what makes you unique – the special gifts and abilities you were born with, and can contribute to the world.

Young or old – it can be tough to know what your purpose is. But it may be the most important thing you discover about yourself. I believe your lasting happiness depends on it. Knowing your purpose will fuel your efforts and give you the drive to keep pressing on, no matter the challenges you face.

Some people think you can’t know your purpose when you are young, or they think if they’re older that it’s too late for it to make any difference. Nonsense! It’s never too late to live the best life you can live. It’s never to live with the feeling you are fulfilling your destiny.

Here’s a thought to wrap your brain around: Everyone dies, but not everyone really lives.

Too many people flounder through life – waiting, hoping that the moment will come when their purpose becomes clear. In the meantime, they are simply going through the motions of living, never experiencing the exciting spark of aliveness that comes from knowing your purpose.

What about you? Do you know why you’re here? Do you wake up every day, excited about your life? If you don’t, you’re not alone, but I believe you can change that. Finding your purpose is a process requiring self-reflection and patience. It seems unfair that you don’t just KNOW why you are here, but life is not always fair (surprise, surprise!).

Here’s the first thing I want you to do. (Yes, as we travel through this year, I’ll occasionally ask you to do something. Whether you do it is totally up to you! I’ll make sure they are always little requests..)

Pull out a sheet of paper and write, “How I Want to Be Remembered”. Then add some columns: Friends; Spouse; Children; Co-Workers; Community; the World. If you go to church, belong to a team, or another special group, add them in.

Now… List all the qualities, deeds and characteristics you would like to be remembered for. It’s not too late…

When you have done that, go back. Find the pattern that shows you your highest values. Discover what drives you. Determine your purpose.

People ask me, “Once I determine my purpose, does that mean I quit whatever I’m doing to pursue that?”

Maybe. Maybe not.

I never tell people what I think they should do. Each person has to make their decisions about how they live their life. The important thing is to spend enough time with yourself to learn your purpose, and then make your decisions around that knowledge.

You really can find your purpose. How do I know?

Because…

I'd like to introduce you to the miracle of Chinese Bamboo...

Hello!

It all begins with a seed - and with the vision of someone willing to wait... A Chinese farmer, usually struggling to survive and provide for his family, plants the seed and sets his hope and vision on all it will provide when it towers 90 feet above his head. With a heart toward
the future he digs hole after hole, plants the seeds, then begins their care. Day after day he carries water to the spot he has marked. And because it's human nature to want to see results he carefully inspects "the spot" every day.

Nothing.

Knowing he has to feed his family he plants other crops, carefully sewn around "the spots" that contain the real hope for his future. He continues to water them every day, feeding them carefully, and watching...

Nothing.

The other crops sprout within weeks, providing nourishment for his family within months, but provide nothing for the future. These crops will not make his dreams come true - they will simply provide for the now. The Chinese Bamboo seeds contain all his hopes, his dreams... A whole year goes by...

Nothing.

He continues to haul water. He stares endlessly at "the spots" but sees nothing but barren ground. His hopes, his dreams, seem so very far away. There is no evidence of life. Has the seed rotted? Has it died before it ever had a chance to grow? Another year goes by...

Nothing.

His neighbors - those who don't know and believe in the miracle of the Chinese Bamboo - laugh at him. They mock his vision for the future. They look on with scorn as he hauls buckets of water to "the spots". He begins to question himself. Will it ever grow? Is he pouring water, and his life's energy, into something that will reap no reward for him?

Another year goes by...

Nothing.

3 years of pouring water, energy and hope into the Chinese Bamboo. Nothing to show for it. Yet he's heard of the miracle of the Chinese Bamboo. He's heard of the huge rewards that come to those who believe. One day he stands over "the spots" and he cries his frustration and fears. "The spots" reveal nothing, the barren ground seeming to mock him, yet the wind whispers hope to him. He sighs and hauls yet more buckets of water. Another year goes by...

Nothing.

4 years.... 4 years of hoping, wishing, and diligently tending his dream. Surely the miracle will happen now. His neighbors have quit laughing. They no longer even care - yet they talk quietly among themselves of the farmer who "isn't quite right". At this point the farmer isn't even sure... Yet he's fallen into a habit so he continues to water "the spots". He continues to feed them. It's simply what he does now, with no knowledge of reward - just the simply, now unspoken hope, that life resides beneath the spots he so carefully tends. Another year
passes...

Nothing.

5 years… The farmer is tired. Tired of hauling buckets. Tired of growing and tending so many other crops to feed his struggling family. Tired of trying to keep his dream alive. T ired of seeing no results day after day. He stares hopelessly at "the spots". There can not possibly be life after so many years. He must have watered them wrong. He must not have fed them correctly. If only he had done things differently, there would be growth. Despair rocks his soul. 5 years he has poured into his dream - into his hope for a better future. His dream mocks him. The vision of a better life for his family melts away under harsh reality. Tears fill his eyes as he grabs for the last hope residing in his soul and slowly lifts the bucket to pour water on to his dream. After 5 years he realizes it would be folly to give up now...

Then comes the morning when the whole village is jolted awake by the cries of joy from the farmer. They watch startled from their windows as he runs down the dusty road calling for his family to come see. As his family races back up the road after him, the rest of the village
pours from their houses to see what has the crazy farmer so excited. They find the family clustered around "the spots", talking excitedly. From the edge of the road they can see green sprouts thrusting out from the barren ground. They seem to be growing before their very eyes! The farmer is dancing.

"The miracle has happened!" he cries.

Chinese Bamboo

"The miracle has come!"

"The spots" become the place for everyone in the village to come - watching in amazement as the bamboo grows, and grows, and grows. 5 feet. 10 feet. 20. 30. 40. 50. 60. 70. 80. 90... In just 6 weeks the bamboo has grown 90 feet tall! 5 years of nothing and now this... 90 feet in 6 weeks! It is truly a miracle!

Chinese Bamboo

The farmer stands to the side. He is aware all his dreams have come true. The harvest of the bamboo will provide for all he dreamed of for his family. He also realizes the lessons he has learned are far more valuable.

He learned to plant a dream.

He learned to do the daily things that would make it a reality.

He learned to ignore those who said it couldn't happen.

He learned to push past his own fear and doubt and keep taking action.

He learned to have faith when there was no reason to have faith.

Now he smiles every time he walks through the village.

Everyone is hauling buckets of water to their own "spots". Gazing over at his towering 90 feet tall bamboo, they know what can happen.

Because of him.

Because of his willingness to blaze the trail and make his dream come true.

What about you? What are you willing to do to make your dreams come true? How long are you willing to work? How long are you willing to go to school? How much faith and belief are you willing to have? I hope your answer is one that will help you achieve all you dream of in life! As you continue to dream, do so knowing that…

Treasure Seeker's Surprise

Hello!

How many balls of clay do you know? Let me tell you a story about Clay Balls...

A man was exploring caves by the seashore. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls. It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake. They didn't look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the

bag out of the cave with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could. He liked to watch the splash they made and he thought at least he had found something to do with the useless balls of clay.

Everything changed when he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone! He stared wide-eyed at the sparkling gem. Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Then it struck him...

He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands. He stared out at the waves as he realized what he had just thrown away!

So what's the moral of this story...?

It's like that with people. Most of them are clay balls. We look at people, maybe even ourselves, and we see a clay ball. They may not look like much on the outside. They may not always be beautiful or sparkling, so we discount them. We see them as less important than someone who is more beautiful. More stylish. More popular. They may not be wealthy or smart. The problem is, we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person.

Precious stonesThere is a treasure in every person you know. I know it can sometimes be hard to see. But if you will take the time to get to know that person, often times the clay ball will crack open and you will discover a brilliant jewel who will enrich your life. You will discover an amazing friend and an amazing person.

Who can you think of right now that you see as nothing but a Clay Ball? Will you accept my challenge today to see that person as a potential treasure? Will you do something today to discover more about who that person really is – try to find the treasure in them?

My hope is that you will not come to the end of your life and find out you have thrown away a fortune in friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. May you take the time to see ALL the people in your life as special people. Mostly, I hope you take time to see the beauty in yourself because…

Give someone the gift of empowerment!

Hello!

As we go through the days and months ahead, I am going to introduce you to amazing teenagers – just as I’m introducing teens to amazing adults. Perhaps doing so will increase respect and appreciation, instead of widening the Generation Gap.

One of my core beliefs about life is that “You Can’t Outgive the Universe”…

Other people say it different ways:
What goes around, comes around.
You reap what you sow.
What you send out will come back to you.

However you want to say it, I believe it is one of the secrets to a happy, fulfilled life. It is also – I believe – the only way to accomplish all your goals and dreams. Giving sets a whole set of universal principles in place. It releases an energy that sends good things back to the giver.

Of course, you can’t give just so you receive something in return. The giving has to be done with a “giving heart” – a desire to make a difference in the world. Just ask Mike Caswell. He learned the joy of giving early in his life…

Mike was a soccer player in Pasadena, California. The teams he played on always received brand new gear every season – uniforms, cleats, everything. The old stuff? It got chucked to the back of closets to lay idle and collect dust.

One day, years into his soccer life, Mike started thinking about all the soccer gear piled high in the back of his closet. Wasn’t there something good that could be done with it? He thought about it. He talked to his parents and friends. And he came up with a plan.

The first thing Mike did was create a flyer to send to every team and every player in his area – asking the players to donate their old gear. The response was tremendous. Huge piles of used gear in great condition came pouring into his house.

While the gear was pouring in, Mike was busy working with church groups and the American Youth Soccer Association to make connections with missionaries in Third World Countries.

The gear continued to pour in. Individuals, and entire teams, brought their old gear, excited to be making a difference. Every bit of it was folded, packed and crated for delivery – then sent on its way.

Imagine the scene with me…

Somewhere in a Third World country a gaggle of wide-eyed kids dressed in tattered clothing and barefoot stand around huge crates. They have just come in off a dusty-field, sweaty and grimy from hours of playing their favorite game. Their wide-eyed stares dissolve into huge grins and whoops of delight as uniform after uniform comes pouring from the crate.

Enough for all of them! Enough to make them look like a real team!

Enough to make them believe someone, somewhere, cares… In that moment a kernel of love and self-respect is planted in the hearts of these kids.

Mike has just set in place a dynamic that will produce results and good things for years to come. He wanted to make a difference. In doing so, he gave hundreds of kids in California the ability to give as well. He gave joy to churches and missionary groups who saw evidence of the ability of kids to want to make a difference. And he gave hundreds of poverty-stricken, soccer-mad kids great joy, hope, and the belief there are people in the world who know and care about them. And there’s no telling what kinds of great things that will produce!

All because Mike looked at a pile of dusty gear in his closet and thought about how he could give.

What about you? What do you have to give? It doesn’t have to be a lot in order to make a difference. Look around you. Look inside you. What do you have to give?

It’s true – You can’t out give the Universe. But you can certainly make the decision to TRY!

I believe you can make a difference in the world because…

And I do, too!

Are You A Critical Thinker ?

Hello Critical Thinkers,

Michael Dlouhy here with Mentoring For
Free with a "Thought" about how Critical
Thinking works in Your Life, or NOT.....

Mentoring For Free Teaches You HOW
to Think NOT WHAT To Think...correct ?

This story from Jay Leno ( Not Verified)
is a perfect Example of HOW the media
is Brainwashing people on "WHAT" to
Think.

I did a coaching call the other day with a
brilliant lady that told me that "Everyone"
was doing "Cash Gifting", my response
to her was >>"That's a LIE"<<..........

The Cash Gifting people said it, so she is
Repeating it just like CNN does without
ever "THINKING" Through the Process.

EVERYONE is A BIG Number, and people
just puke this nonsense on anyone that will
Listen and give their Puke Power.

I told her that I did NOT know ONE person
personally that was in Cash Gifting, She did
NOT have any Proof other than Repeating
what some web-site "Told Her To Think"

There is a 20 year old Network Marketing
that is saying they had 60% growth last
month and any "Critical Thinker" knows
that this is Mathematically Impossible.

They Don't have to prove it, all they need to
do is say it then get everyone to repeat it.

The article below is NOT about Your belief
or Disbelief it's about how people "Believe"
what they are told without the first thought
of "Critical Thinking" coming from them..

You can sharpen Your Thinking Skills when
You Stop The Chatter In Your OWN Mind,

We Believe In You
Michael & Linda Dlouhy

Jay Leno on President Bush (Surprising)

Jay Leno on President Bush (Surprising)
Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we
don't often see....

As most of you know I am not a President
Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is
not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans,
and it seems to hit the mark.

The other day I was reading Newsweek
magazine and came across some Poll
data I found rather hard to believe. It must
be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent
of Americans are unhappy with the direction
the country is headed and 69 percent of the
country is unhappy with the performance of
the President.

In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't
happy and want a change. So being the
knuck le dragger I am, I started thinking, '
What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running
water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having
air conditioning in the summer and heating
in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these
unhappy folks have a job?

D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a
grocery store at any time and see more
food in moments than Darfur has seen
in the last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars
and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the
Atlantic Ocean without having to present
identification papers as we move through
each state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and
safe motels we would find along the way
that can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants
with varying cuisine from around the world
is just not good enough either.

H. Or could it be that when we wreck our
car, emergency workers show up and
provide services to help all and even send
a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent
of Americans who own a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that in
the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of
trained firefighters will appear in moments
and use top notch equipment to extinguish
the flames, thus saving you, your family,
and your belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of
your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or
prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with
a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to
defend you and your family against
attack or loss.

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighbor
hood free of bombs or militias raping and
pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods
where 90% of teenagers own cell phones
and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious,
social and political freedoms we enjoy
that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks
unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of un--
grateful, spoiled brats the world has ever
seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. ,
yet has a great disdain for its citizens.

They see us for what we are. The most
blessed people in the world who do nothing
but complain about what we don't have, and
what we hate about the country instead of
thanking the good Lord we live here.I know,
I know.

What about the president who took us
into war and has no plan to get us out?

The president who has a measly 31 percent
approval rating? Is this the same president
who guided the nation in the dark days after
9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring
an economy out of recession?

Could this be the same guy who has been
called every name in the book for succeeding
in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats
safe from terrorist attacks?

The commander in chief of an all-volunteer
army that is out there defending you and
me? Did you hear how bad the President
is on the news or talk show?

Did this news affect you so much, make
you so unhappy you couldn't take a look
around for yourself and see all the good
things and be glad?

Think about it............are you upset at the
President because he actually caused you
personal pain OR is it because the 'Media'
told you he was failing to kiss your sorry
ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. It's time you
realize the President doesn't do one thing
without Congressional approval. So don't
blame the President blame your
congressman or woman..

The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have
volunteered to serve, and in many cases
may have died for your freedom. There
is currently no draft in this country. T

hey didn't have to go. They are able to
refuse to go and end up with either a ''
general'' discharge, an 'other than
honorable'' discharge or, worst case
scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge
after a few days in the brig. so why
then the flat-out discontentment in
the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the
media. If it bleeds it leads and they
specialize in bad news. Everybody will
watch a car crash with blood and guts.

How many will watch kids selling lemon
ade at the corner? The media knows this
and media outlets are for-profit corporations.

They offer what sells, and when criticized,
try to defend their actions by 'justifying'
them in one way or another. Just ask why
they tried to allow a murderer like O.J.
Simpson to write a book about how he
didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would
have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use
the New York Times for the bottom of your
bird cage. Then start being grateful for all
we have as country. There is exponentially
more good than bad. We are among the
most blessed people on Earth and should
thank God several times a day, or at least
be thankful and appreciative.' '

With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of
control, mud slides, flooding, severe
thunderstorms tearing up the country
from one end to another, and with the
threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,

'Are we sure this is a good time to take
God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

Jay Leno

Please keep this in circulation. There
are so many people who need to read
this and grasp the truth of it.

Using self talk and movies for Inspiration

I recently read a blog by an Australian blogger named Yaro Starak He talked about staying productive when you feel like giving up. Yaro was basically talking about blogging as a money making profession, but his advice seems to carry over into just about anything a person might do. He mentions a number of things I have learned in the MentoringForFree program. Number 1 and in my view most important, your mind set. Your mind can both be your greatest asset or your biggest enemy. In his blog Yaro says at times when you just don't feel motivated you need to look for the little rewards. Patience and willpower. You sometimes just have to force your self to put out the work and focus on your work and not on all the external elements that are bringing you down. These are great words. I'm sure they work for many people. But what if you are beyond patience? What if you have run out of willpower?

Success often comes slowly. You have to put in a lot of background work to set up the process to achieve your success. It sometimes feels like it is a long way off and it is quite easy to get discouraged and want to give up. This is when you need to do some "self talk".

You are probably wondering what I mean by self talk. It's basically a little pep talk you tell your self two or three times a day, some times hundreds of times a day (one which you have specifically written down for yourself) . In this talk to yourself, you state your goals and how you plan on achieving these goals. No it is not just a statement about "I want to be rich by doing network marketing"of something like that. It has to be so very much more. You need to put your heart and soul into your self talk. You need to give yourself that boost. It needs to fill you with inspiration and a knowing that You Will Succeed.

Each person's self talk is different. Everyone is motivated and inspired by different things. I recently learned about a mind movie. One of the mentors in our group recently made one for himself and posted it on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVPPz1QgTlg Reuben made this mind movie for himself to replay 2 and3 times a day to help stay motivated and focused on his goals. Even though Reuben made this one for himself I also find his video very inspiring. Maybe you will too. This is a wonderful idea for the person who is very visual. Any one can make their very own mind movie. In your own movie you would put in the music, pictures and text which most motivates and inspires you.

Be inspired. Write your self talk.. Make your own mind movie..

If you need help with either of these, the mentors at MentoringForFree can help you.

Free Hugs

Be sure to watch the video at the end of this story.

"Do you want a hug?" The young man asked Ginny. He held a sign in his hand, "Free Hugs.” I looked around. There were other people with him. They held their hand-made signs high. The message was the same on all of them – "Free Hugs!"

"Do you want a free hug?" The young man asked Ginny again.

"Sure!" Ginny smiled and walked up to him. She reached up, wrapped her arms around his neck, pulled him down to her level, and hugged him with all the love she had in her heart.

They parted. "WOW!" He exclaimed. "That was the best hug I've had all day!"

"I'm a hugger." Ginny smiled at him.

He looked at me. "How about a hug?"

"You got it!" I walked into his open arms. We held briefly and parted.

A young lady walked up and hugged Ginny. She turned to me, opened her arms, and hugged me too.

Ginny and I stepped back and watched the "Free Huggers" work their magic with those who accepted them. They offered hugs to anyone and everyone.

#############

Juan Mann (One Man) returned to Sydney, Australia in 2004, after living in Europe for several years. He was depressed over his parent's divorce. Most of his friends had moved on. It was just him. He sat for months. Alone and depressed, Juan Mann decided to make a difference and reach out. He made a sign that read, "Free Hugs" and stood at the Pitt Street Mall – one of the busiest streets in the center of Sydney. He put his arms around anyone who accepted his offer.

At first, he left his wallet at home, had a friend watch over him, and expected to be ridiculed. After fifteen minutes, a woman approached him. "My dog died today." She said. "It's also the first anniversary of my only daughter's death. I could use a hug."

Juan was quoted as saying, "That first woman, it was more than a hug; it meant something to her."

People joined Mann. They opened their arms to others. His message spread across the city. Afraid of lawsuits, officials banned "Free Hugs". The people revolted. More than 10,000 people signed a petition to allow him to continue his mission.

Shimon Moore, the lead singer of "The Sick Puppies" happened to see Juan. They hugged and became friends. Moore borrowed a video camera and filmed Juan giving hugs. When Mann's grandmother died, Moore put the video together with his band's song called, "All The Same" and posted the video on "YouTube" with the following caption:

“Sometimes, a hug is all we need. Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, a man whose sole purpose mission was to reach out and hug a stranger, to brighten up their lives."

The video was a hit. It spread around the world. Juan has appeared on Oprah and several other major television shows. His idea continues to gain support and grow.

After his first day on Pitt Street, Juan wondered if others were doing the same. He found Amma – The Hugging Saint of India, Jason Hunter in Atlanta, Georgia, and Jayson Littman in New York.

Jayson started his hugging campaign the same year as Juan. They both felt a need to reach out to humanity. A financial analyst in Manhattan, Jayson believed New Yorkers could use a hug. From 2004 through to 2006, he spent one weekend afternoon a month holding his "Free Hugs" sign in his hands and opened his arms to anyone who needed human comfort.

Since then, Jayson's mission has been taken over by others who believe – hugs for all. On the last Saturday afternoon of the month, you'll find them gathered in Union Square in Lower Manhattan. They hold their signs high and offer their open arms to all who need a human touch.

#############

The huggers worked the crowd. Most people ignored them or shook their heads to indicate they were not interested. Those who opened their arms in return, walked away with a smile on their face.

I felt a warmth – a glow – fill my heart. Ginny and I were going through rough times. Money was scarce, bill collectors called on a regular basis. We were stressed and worried, but on that afternoon, for a brief moment, it was all forgotten. It took a simple hug to make everything better.

Dear Jana: My Limu Plus Testimonial

My name is Jason Mallo and I have a testimonial for Limu Plus. I have had back problems all my life growing up. Years of getting my back checked by the school nurse and nothing done. Later in my working years, I couldn't handle the constant back aches everyday so I convinced myself to get enough courage up to see the doctor about it.

In early 2002, I was diagnosed with severe Scoliosis. At the time I was an avid competition archer winning many tournaments and being runner up to the state champion. In 2003, I was awarded the best archer in Iowa in my division. Late 2004, I could hardly shoot my bow. I was on numerous pain medicine, anti inflammatory medicine, and other medicine just to do my daily activities.

Nothing ever seemed to work for me always having the chronic lower back ache waking up with back cramps and restless nights in bed. My doctor suggested getting a tempur pedic bed, so I went out and spent $4000 on a new bed. Wow that was great, I slept better but my pain and cramps never went away.

In 2005, I stopped shooting all together and playing golf, and work has become a struggle anymore. I have lived on muscle relaxers and pain medicine for 2 years and now the doctor is saying the medicine won't do me any good anymore like it ever did anyway. In late 2007, my good friend Ernie Pinard introduced me to Vitamark and said that they have a product that may help with my pain in my back and that was Limu Plus. The GREEN that I am, I read over all the information and re-read it, and finally I made my mind up and I joined Vitamark in January 2008.

Still leery of the Limu Plus, I started with the Crave and loved the energy and weight loss I got from that. Next, Ernie was telling me: "Jason, next Autoship you should get some Limu Plus, you won't be disappointed." So I gave it a try last month I ordered my Limu and gave it a try. Now its been 3 weeks, and every morning I wake up, I have no back ache, no cramps at night, and I am finally sleeping through the night again.

On March 11th, I had an appointment with my back specialist and he asked what I have been taking for my pain and I told him my discovery of Limu, he was very interested and asked for more information. Now that I have discovered Limu I am getting back into my archery and this spring will be golf. Thanks, Ernie Pinard, Vitamark, and Limu. I am a true believer that this product works for me and helps me with my daily activities!

Thanks,
Jason Mallo

"BE The Difference Club"

I'm sure you've heard of Caltech (California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California) which is one of the world's premier research institutions. It was started as Throop Polytechnic in 1903 by astronomer George Ellery Hale who had the vision of creating a first-class "college of technology and science." First he recruited chemist, Arthur Amos Noyes from MIT and then physicist Robert Andrew Millikan from the University of Chicago. Even with these deep thinkers and the caliber of people they've since attracted, don't think for a moment it is a place without humor. The three, astronomer, physicist and chemist were dubbed "Tinker, Thinker and Stinker."

If you don't know about Caltech, I'm sure you've heard of some former "Techers" who have made their mark on the world -- or at very least you've used their inventions without knowing it: Frank Capra (film director - It's A Wonderful Life), Chester F. Carlson (inventor of photocopying), Gordon E. Moore (Cofounder of Intel Corp.), Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17 astronaut and the 12th and last human to have walked on the moon, also a former U.S. senator).

Although much of the talk revolves around quarks and quasars, the students (and faculty) know how to have fun. Caltech is also famous for its annual Senior Ditch Day where the Seniors secure their rooms with complex codes that Freshmen, Sophomore and Juniors try to unravel. Once the code has been broken, the successful underclassman finds a bribe within the room (usually a feast of some kind) in hopes that the room won't be trashed (or pranked). Sometimes the bribes are taken - sometimes not. One year the Senior returned to his room to find all his furniture bolted to the ceiling.

Even the professors get in on the fun. One year the late Richard Feynman (a Nobel Prize winner) offered $1000 to any student who could build an electric motor 1/64th of an inch on each side. The challenge was met -- the working motor was the size of a grain of sand -- about the size of the period at the end of this sentence. It is on display at Caltech's Eastbridge Building and a notice reads: THIS MOTOR IS WORN OUT AND NO LONGER RUNS.

I can't even imagine a motor this size: . Isn't it exciting that we have minds that not only imagine such things but actually create them?! It blows my mind!

But certifiable geniuses are not immune from the same feelings, pressures and fears that you and I experience. When all is said and done, knowledge cannot heal a crushed heart or repair a broken relationship. It is kindness and respect that build bridges of understanding and tolerance. No amount of mathematical or logical prowess can do that.

Each of us has the same genius for making the world a better place -- it's called reaching out and helping someone without expecting anything in return. It's all a matter of seeing and treating people the way you want them to see and treat you. It's that simple. It's that world-changing! It's that dynamic. And it's guaranteed to change your life and those around you.

Profile of the Week

Francine's mother was a herpetologist and taught at the local community college. Her father, a veterinarian specializing in reptiles, was in charge of the Reptile House at the local zoo. So it was no surprise to the family that Francine became enamored with snakes at an early age.

She smiled at the thought that most people shrink from snakes, but she couldn't get enough of them. Francine loved making the zoo rounds with her dad. The Reptile House was her "home away from home" and where she could be found after school and on the weekends.

It wasn't uncommon for her to have snakes wrapped around each arm while her dad examined them. And she was the one he usually called for help when a snake escaped its cage because she was quick and fearless. He had taught her early how to catch a snake by holding the tip of its tail until it calmed down.

Francine smiled as she remembered how the boys at school were attracted to her and the girls were repulsed by her. She knew it was their ignorance of snakes that made them that way.

Francine couldn't remember the exact moment she knew she would follow in her father's footsteps - she was always "the snake girl."

Her most difficult years were college - not because of the course work - it was easy enough. It was difficult because she was so far from the zoo and her dad's practice. She contacted the local rescue shelter to see if they needed help with reptiles or snakes. She chuckled to herself as she remembered how they'd asked her to come in that day!

Now here she was the head herpetologist at her "home" zoo. Her folks are retired now but show up every now and then to help. It's great to see them handling the snakes and letting the visiting children touch and hold them. Their's is a different kind of "petting zoo" -- the best way to experience there is little to fear and much to learn.

Life has come full circle, and Francine couldn't be happier.

Last week's brainteaser: How can two people step on one page of newspaper so that they can't touch each other without stepping off the newspaper? Answer: Place the newspaper page under a closed door. Each person steps on one end of the page so that they cannot touch each other without opening the door. To open the door, they would have to step off the paper.

Tips & Tricks

Coins, Tires & Cut Flowers

Use a penny to tell you if it's time to replace the tires on your car. Insert a U.S. penny into the tread. If you can't cover the top of Abe Lincoln's head inside the tread, it's time to replace the tire. And to keep cut flowers fresh longer, put a copper penny and a cube of sugar into the vase water.

Direct-sales businesses boom as economy tightens

ALEXIA FODERE/ FOR THE MIAMI HERALD

Carmen Rojas, who hosted a Passion Party at her home, shows an octopus toy used to give massages.

* Is direct sales for you?

It's Saturday night and a dozen women are in Carmen Rojas' living room, passing around edible lotions, flavored body powders and adult toys. For Rojas of Miami, this night is about more than getting these women to buy her products.

By the party's end, Rojas' guests have spent more than $300, and she will pocket 40 percent of the sales. More importantly, she has ensured future income by inspiring at least one to host a party.

Direct selling has become a money-making option more people are considering to cover rising gas costs, be their own bosses and better balance the responsibilities of career and family. There are tons of direct sales companies to choose from such as kitchenware, fashion, jewelry, tools, cosmetics. The goal with direct selling is to ramp up your earnings by recruiting enough people under your network so that your income benefits from their sales, too.

More than 15 million people worked as direct sales consultants in 2007, generating more than $30 billion in sales, according to the Direct Selling Association, which insists: ``We're in the middle of a boom in home-based businesses.''

''There are so many more reasons today that people are going into direct sales,'' says Amy Robinson, spokeswoman for the Direct Selling Association. They are looking for income while searching for permanent jobs, their salaries no longer cover costs, or they might be stay-at-home parents who view it as a flexible way to supplement household income, she says.

Just three months ago, Rojas was working in a bank. After her position was eliminated, she figured she would give direct selling a try adding, ``I never really liked the 9 to 5 thing.''

Direct sales, also know as network, multilevel or referral marketing compensates those who use and enthusiastically recommend their products or services. The ease of entry makes it accessible for people of all walks of life with a gamut of motivations.

In the past few months, I have been approached about a half dozen times by mom friends and acquaintances about direct selling opportunities. A single mom friend who owns a food business and does direct sales on the side, wants me to consider a new multi-level online shopping portal. ''I'm not telling you to leave your regular job,'' she insists. ``But it's a great way to earn extra income.''

A word of caution: you must be comfortable pitching products to family and friends and recruiting others as hosts and consultants; you will need to work hard to earn money (these are not get-rich-quick businesses); you must be prepared to pay start-up costs and you will not get benefits such as health insurance.

Of course, unlimited earning potential and working on your own schedule attracts many direct sellers, particularly in today's economic environment. Only 10 percent of people who work as consultants do it full time. Most work less than 10 hours a week and earn a median income of $2,400 a year: ''there's the flexibility people are looking for,'' Robinson says.

Bonnie Ross, a stay-at-home mother for eight years, wanted to find a job that would bring her family some income but still allow her to be there for homework, play dates and dinner. About 10 months ago, she fell in love with sterling jewelry and signed up to sell Silpada Designs. ``Silver catches people's attention . . . it jiggles and shines so it's like I'm a walking advertisement.''

Ross laid out an $1,750 in start-up costs. She now manages four women and earns commission off her own sales and theirs. She says it took about eight parties to recoup her initial outlay and she now earns anywhere from $200 to $600 a week hosting parties on nights and weekends. Ross' advice: Set goals. Hers is to double her business next month.

Others find direct selling works with their lifestyle.

Marcell Buckner, 62, started selling Pharmanex, skincare and anti-aging products, four years ago. He put in about 10-hours a week while running two businesses -- an insurance agency and as a third-party administrator. Now, he is counting on income from direct sales to take him into a ``new era of life.''

He now hopes to sell his businesses and devote his full attention to selling the products, working on his own schedule during his senior years. ``This is the right thing for me at the right time. I am looking to transition.''

One veteran direct seller cautions anyone considering direct sales to ease into it as a full-time job.

Eighteen years ago, Paula Ehrlich began selling Nu Skin products on her lunch hour. Four years later, she and her husband Morton quit their corporate jobs to sell the products and grow the business full time. The Miami couple now manages more than 20,000 sales consultants in 40 countries. They encourage everyone they recruit to think hard about why they want to be in the business and whether they can handle rejection. ''Not everyone is successful,'' Paula acknowledges. ``Don't sell anything you don't believe in.''

What makes an MLM leader different?

How do you put into words exactly what makes leaders different? Can you possibly predict who will rise from follower status to becoming a recognized leader and someone who is widely accepted as a guru? Probably a lot of people figure that when you look at a leader, you see certainty and passion and enthusiasm. So long as you see those things, a person inspires confidence in others. It's not real scientific, but I'll bet you've noticed the same thing in your life. That person with a high level of confidence is easy to follow. The person without it? You hardly even notice them.

What this means is, to be a leader, you need to be certain that the actions you take make a difference. It really doesn't matter so much how you do it, so long as you do it with passion. There's an old saying, "I may not be right, but I'm never in doubt." THAT is a person who can be an inspiring leader. Anyone with a burning desire to be successful will stay away from people in doubt. In order to bring the right people into your MLM business, you need to act with certainty. When you do that, you are irresistible.

It's always surprising how many people look to others to guide them when, if they just Googled their question, theyíd have an answer. True leaders don't wait for others to make a move to do it for them. They choose a good example, then they figure it out and make it work. A leader entering unknown territory still doesn't bat an eye. They do it anyway. This isn't revolutionary. Every one of us learns to drive by driving. Being a leader is all about having a "think REALLY big" mindset, and then doing the necessary actions. A leader absolutely knows that they are the ONLY one responsible for their future, so they do the logical actions that will bring the results they want.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM! WILL YOU QUALIFY FOR THE MOST EXCLUSIVE, INTENSE TRAINING OF PERSONALITY TYPES

This is super training and development stuff for serious guys and girls only..because..It will take you deeper into the color to success than ever dreamed possible! Nail your prospect's sweet spot. learn the personality types.
Good news Before learning the personality types, I had a difficult time talking to prospesct. I know of no other subject that when used correctly can have such a positive inpact on how to talk to prospects.
Network marketing can be frustrating without training and development. Sometimes I felt no control. But when you build relationships, it changes. You can succeed with any network marketing company.
BUT THAT'S JUST PART OF THE STORY..
See what Laura Lewandowski has to say about learning about personality types:
Michael Dlough training and development helps with personal relationships. Color To Success is incredible. I learned Myers-Brigg personality-typing in school and all through my career. You learn about personality traits, your best career choice, and how to relate to people. But it was confusing. Michael's training gives you step-by-step how to relate to people. It changed my relationship with my husband. We laugh now, but we had issues. He's so Green. I'm so Blue. When we realized it's just our personalities, the tension melted.
What kind of price tag can you put on THAT? It's about becoming a better person and developing as a leader. Some people think leaders are just for business or industry. But a leader attracts people. To do that, you have to walk in their shoes, understand them. Color To Success helps a lot. It's a good foundation.
You learn how other people perceive what you say, and how you should talk to them, based on their personality. I've always asked a lot of questions. But it wasn't until the Colors training that I started to ask the RIGHT questions to understand them as a person.
So now, I LOVE to listen to see what I can find out about them, what's important to them. I'm WAY different than when I first met Michael."

Laura Lewandowski Missourget

Even better

The biggest change in Network Marketing is this: to spot these personalities, you must LISTEN to people! And wonderful things seem to happen when you acturally listen. When you listen to people and truly understand their personality, one has the ability to help inspire them to greatness. This is done though training and development.
The rewards for the ones who have learned the personality types have been more than financial. The biggest reward for me was learning that network marketing is not a sales business. It is a teaching & mentoring business.

Think about it

With a unique and insightful style, Michael Dlough identifies four primary personality profiles using colors to describe them. Go ahead, take the test, and discover your true color, find out what makes you (and others) tick. Gain insight into your own primary motivations, identify and develop your natural strengths and transform your weaknesses, improve your relationships with yourself and with others, read other people more easily and accurately, and enhance your business performance. The Color to success will, quite simply, with training and development make a difference.
