What's Fair?"
Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries
By Pastor Ken Klaus, Speaker of The Lutheran Hour®
"
April 16, 2008
I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. 2 Corinthians 8:13-14
The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
According to the top executives of the nation's five largest oil companies, that's the way it is.
Appearing before a House Committee, the businessmen tried to explain just why their companies should keep getting billions of dollars in tax breaks even though last year they made a profit of one hundred and twenty-three billion dollars.
J. S. Simon, senior vice-president of Exxon, a company that, last year, made a record forty billion dollars said, "We depend on high earnings during the up cycle to sustain investment over the long term, including the down cycles."
A Democratic Congressman from Missouri spoke for many when he said, "The up cycle has been going on too long . . . Your approval rating is lower than (Congress) ours, and that means you're down low."
Christians, having felt the financial pinch at the oil pumps and the pain of winter heating bills, know believers should have a different outlook when it comes to using the gifts God has entrusted to them.
St. Paul, writing to the Christians at Corinth, said those who are financially blessed should do what they can to help those who are under duress.
After all, that is what Jesus has done for us. The Son of God left heaven's high throne to be born as a human being, to live under the law, to resist Satan's temptations, to die the death we deserved. All this Jesus endured so we might be forgiven of our sins, be safe, and made secure.
St. Paul summed up the Savior's redeeming sacrifice when he wrote, "though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9).
It was the Father's way of making sure that all those who have faith in His Son as their Savior, never have a "down cycle."
THE PRAYER: Dear heavenly Father, be with those who are in extreme financial difficulty. May I, as one of the recipients of Jesus' sacrifice, do what I can to help those in difficulty. Finally, let those in business be given a reasonable profit along with a caring conscience. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.
PS - Some readers of the Daily Devotion have asked me to write about the widely carried story of the woman, who, having become a "man" through a sex-change operation, is now pregnant. All I can say about that story is to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln. Frequently, he would ask people if you call a dog's tail a leg, how many legs will a dog have? Most people responded by saying the dog would have five legs. Lincoln would counter by pointing out the dog still has four legs. You can't turn a tail into a leg by giving it a different name. This is just my way of saying although the "woman" may have undergone some surgeries, and the media delights in saying "a man is pregnant," the truth is, "he" is pregnant because she is still a woman.

Do You Know A Volunteer?
Have you ever done any volunteer work? I have and I can guarantee that it sure makes you feel good. A lot of times when you volunteer to help out you end up benefiting as much (or more) than those you help! Whether it's helping at a school, nursing home, hospital, church, animal rescue center, YMCA or YWCA, beach clean-up day or a city park, a few hours of your time will make a huge difference!
Did you know there are actually physical benefits to volunteering? Not only are you performing important work, studies have shown that there are important therapeutic benefits. When you do an unselfish act for someone else, the biochemical activity in the brain increases and releases endorphins (the "feel good" chemicals) that fight depression and stress! People who volunteer experience a sense of well-being and their self-esteem increases.
Almost 61 million people volunteered in the United States in 2006. That was only a little over 26 percent of the population and the number of volunteers is decreasing each year. But I believe that volunteering is something that everyone can and should do. It doesn't matter how old or young, how rich or poor, how physically fit you are (or aren't), or where you live -- there are hundreds of people, animals, and environmental problems that need help. The key is to find something that you really feel passionate about and "just do it."
We've published 10 ebooks with over 101 ideas in each one that you can download if you need ideas -- just go to www.TogetherWeCanChangeTheWorldPublishing.com and help yourself! We have a Division called Together We Can Change The World Day (T-Day) where you can look for a project happening in your area or list your own! (We're going to be gearing this up in the next few months and I'll be introducing you to Lin Seahorn our new Director of T-Day in upcoming issues of this newsletter -- so "stay tuned"!)
If you work with an organization that utilizes Volunteers, you know they are crucial to your success! Did you know that Sunday, the 20th, is Volunteer Recognition Day? One of the ebooks we offer is 101 Ways to Show Appreciation to Your Volunteers. Why not download it and make sure your volunteers know how much they mean to you and your organization?
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to be a volunteer. You have a special gift or skill that is valuable and needed. Whether you like to read aloud to a patient in a hospital or group of children at the library; take care of abandoned animals at a rescue shelter; knit sweaters for homeless individuals; answer phones or help with mailings; or serve at a local food pantry or soup kitchen, no one can do it just the way you can! Decide to reach beyond your own needs to help someone else, and watch how it changes your world!
You'll make it a great year!

Specially mark the front parking spots for "volunteers only" -- have the CEO and others give up their parking spots for the week. Profile of the Week
Jerry feels the familiar tug on his heart strings as he sits in the stands of the new soccer field watching the players compete in the final game of the season. With only a few seconds remaining, the team scores the winning goal and he jumps from the stands to congratulate his team. He is so proud of these kids.
Jerry's passion for soccer started many years ago while growing up in a small town in the Midwest. An only child raised by his mother, Jerry craved the companionship of kids his own age. His mother let him join the city soccer league when he was 8 years old, and soccer has been a passion in his life ever since.
Jerry thinks back to those early years when the league lacked money for uniforms, equipment and a decent place to play. He smiles as he remembers playing on empty land or in parking lots. And they always played in their street clothes. As a kid, that didn't matter to him. What mattered was playing -- being with other kids -- being part of a team. Jerry is thankful for the camaraderie and team skills he learned as a result of playing soccer, all of which helped make him the person he is today.
And so he didn't hesitate when asked to coach. Jerry feels strongly about giving back. As a result, he has touched the lives of thousands of young people during his 14 years as the volunteer leader for the city soccer league. He has raised countless funds to build a soccer field, buy uniforms and equipment, and provide a safe environment for young people to develop their skill and love of the game. He also coaches a team every season to stay connected to the kids.
Although thankful for a recent soccer league award, Jerry will tell you the awards and accolades are not the reason he continues his volunteer efforts in soccer. "I can say with complete truthfulness, it is not an award or the acclaim of others; it is the appreciation from a former soccer player whose life has taken a positive turn due to some of my efforts," says Jerry.
Jerry is jolted back to the present and his excited championship team. He grabs the team soccer ball and yells above the kids' excited chatter. "Come on, guys, let's go get some pizza. Last one to the van is a rotten egg!"

Tips & Tricks
Vinegar, Onions & Berries
Vinegar does a great job fighting offensive odors. Try rubbing distilled vinegar on your hands before and after you slice onion, garlic or clean fish. You can also use undiluted white vinegar on your hands to remove stains from berries.

Attraction
Have you ever spent time wondering why many good people continually attract negative situations into their lives while others seem to attract nothing but beautiful situations into theirs. This concept contains power, possibility, and promise if you will use it.
You are God's highest form of creation. You are a living breathing creative magnet. You have the ability to control what you attract into your life. There have always been small select groups of individuals who are aware of how to work in harmony with this natural law of the universe: The Law of Attraction.
This law clearly states you can only attract to you that which is in harmony with you. Everything in the universe vibrates. That is based on the Law of Vibration. That includes your mind and body. Look at your body through a microscope, it is a mass of energy that is moving and vibrating. Your mind controls the vibration you are in at any given moment. You control your mind by the thoughts you choose. No one can cause you to think something you do not want to think. This is where freedom comes in, this is also where the problem begins with most people. They permit what is happening around them to determine how they think. They have become the play-thing for outside forces.
Ninety percent of the population wish positive but think negative. Their negative thoughts puts them in a negative vibration which by law determines what is attracted into their lives. As a creative individual you will continually attract good things into your life by thinking positive thoughts and expecting the best life has to offer. You deserve it.

For the Children!
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and I want to introduce you to Selena.
When her parents deserted her at 9 months of age, little Selena weighed only 12 pounds. Her biological parents left her with Selena's great aunt and all the baby did was scream. She'd never known love -- had never been bathed.
Selena's new mommy took the infant to the doctor and found that she had Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS). Since then, she has also suffered a stroke and has cerebral palsy. Selena has left side brain damage and only 10 percent vision in her right eye. She is unable to use her right hand and didn't walk until she was 4 years old -- and then only with the help of braces and a cast.
Selena is now 6 years old and has migraines every day. She suffers from major speech delay and uses sign language. She does attend school but is 3 years behind. And she's no stranger to doctors and specialists.
Even with all her problems (and because of her adopted mother's love and selfless nurturing), Selena has a radiant smile and is her "mommy's" pride and joy -- her "precious angel"!
Unfortunately, abuse stories like Selena's are not that uncommon.
Every 10 seconds a child is reported abused or neglected. . . Every single day in the United States, 4 children die from child abuse. . . 79% of the children killed are under the age of 4 years. . . Shaken Baby Syndrome is widely unknown and rapidly growing. . . these tiny victims range in age from a few days old to a few months old.
The stories are horrific: Little Beaunca was only 2 years old when she died from a beating by her mother because she spilled juice on the floor. James was only 3 years old when he was kicked, punched and shaken to death by his father because he was playing too loudly while his father watched a football game. 22 month old Miguel was beaten to death for having an accident in his pants.
Of the thousands of children who survive such abuse many will experience physical and mental injuries for life. Some of the results include severe brain injury (like little Selena), seizures, mental retardation, paralysis, loss of hearing, blindness, learning difficulties, delayed development, cerebral palsy and more.
I invite you to make a difference and consider becoming a voice for these voiceless children. Visit the website, Children Without A Voice USA (www.ChildrenWithoutAVoiceUSA.org). This organization's founder, Lin Seahorn, is our very own Director of Together We Can Change the World Day! Lin is a survivor of abuse and the foster care system (there are currently 1.5 million children in the system) and has been fighting child abuse in the U.S. for over 25 years.
If you need help or suspect child abuse, call this 24 hour Hotline number: 800-4-A-CHILD (800-422-4453). You may save a child's life by making a simple phone call!
Please help raise Child Abuse Awareness in the U.S. during the month of April by wearing and distributing blue ribbons to everyone you know. Or you can order blue ribbon pins (25 cents each) at: 800-924-2643 (National Exchange Club Foundation in Norfolk, VA). Why the color blue? Because it reminds us of the horrible bruises born by these tiny, voiceless victims.
Life is precious -- and everyone deserves love, security, and support.
Make it a great year!
Sandi Valentine

Feeling the tug on his shirt sleeve, Pete looks down into the sad eyes of Jacob.
"Mr. Pete," has asks, "Can I play today?"
"Of course, Jacob!"
Boys just like Jacob come every Saturday morning to be part of the neighborhood recreation program. Many of them do not have dads to spend time with them. Pete has been involved as a volunteer now for about six years. His week would not be complete without spending each Saturday morning play games with anywhere from 30 to 50 boys.
It all started when his next door neighbor, Sam, came to tell Pete he was taking a new job and would be moving. His neighbor was concerned about the city recreation program where he volunteered.
"Pete, would you ever consider working at the rec program?" Sam asked.
Initially Pete had thought he wouldn't have time. After all, he had his own two sons who needed his time and attention. But Sam pointed out that Pete's own sons could be involved, too.
It has been a great experience for all three family members. In fact, Pete says it has brought them closer together. Each week they look forward to not only spending time together, but to making a difference in the lives of boys who long for someone to care about them.
For two hours each week, Pete sees the sad eyes of boys like Jacob light up.
"These little guys just need to hang out with someone who cares about them," Pete shares. "Not only that, but my life -- and my boys' lives -- are enriched as well!"
Pete is not only a volunteer at the recreation center, but regularly speaks to groups throughout his city encouraging others to be involved in volunteer service.
Pete's passion is evident as he shares, "Whether it be working with kids, the homeless, domestic violence victims. . . it doesn't matter. Just get involved and make a difference!"

Nail Polish, Measuring Cups and Baby Bottles
Use an easily seen color of nail polish to trace over the numbers on your measuring cups - it will last much longer than the paint the company uses (or make raised markings easier to read). This also works well for marking dosage levels on baby bottles and medicine cups.

Popcorn
I don't know about you, but popcorn is one of my favorite foods! I grew up eating popcorn and milk for dinner on Saturday nights. Back then, we popped the corn in a little oil in a 3 quart sauce pan. Whenever anyone in my family wanted popcorn, they always came to me because I was the best "popper" in the family (probably because I liked it so much!). Did you know the 6th is Caramel Popcorn Day? (National Popcorn Day is the end of January -- there's some debate as to the exact day. Some say the 19th others say whatever day the Super Bowl is on.) :-)
Did you know that U.S. citizens consume 17 billion quarts of popped popcorn every year and eat more than citizens of any other country? That figures out to be 54 quarts of popcorn for every man, woman and child. 70% is eaten at home and 30% at theaters, stadiums, schools, etc.
The popularity of popcorn goes back to at least the 4th century in Mexico and Peru. A popcorn kernel was found dating to the 10th century in a southwest Utah Pueblo Indian ruin. In the 16th century popcorn was an integral part of the Aztec Indian ceremonies.
More recently in the United States, popcorn became very popular in the 1890s. During the Great Depression popcorn sold for 5 or 10 cents a bag and was one of the few luxuries most families could afford. Because of the sugar shortage during World War II and the subsequent lack of candy and other sweets, popcorn consumption in the U.S. tripled. It experienced a slump in the 1950s when television caused a drop in theater (movie) attendance. But it soon revived popularity when the industry started equating popcorn with TV watching. With the advent of microwave popcorn, the industry has seen a resurgence in U.S. popcorn sales of over $240 million per year.
In 1914, Cloid H. Smith founded the American Pop Corn Company and launched the first name brand popcorn -- Jolly Time.
Go here: http://www.popcorn.org/encyclopedia/popvideo.cfm to watch kernels explode in super slow motion -- it's really cool. You can also learn how and why this one type of corn pops. Learn how to save, restore and pop the "Old Maids" (kernels that don't pop)!
Now to the sweeter subject -- caramel corn was invented by a German immigrant named Frederick William Rueckheim and his brother. His family in Germany was in the candy making business. They had the idea of putting molasses over popcorn and adding some peanuts and called it "Candied Popcorn and Peanuts." It debuted at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893. But people didn't like the sticky molasses, so they created a molasses coating that was crispy and dry. This secret formula is still a secret in the Cracker Jack Company to this day.
Legend has it that the name Cracker Jack came from a popular expression of that era. When someone really liked something, they described it as "cracker jack." Rueckheim liked the term, and trademarked it in 1896. He also copyrighted their slogan, "The more you eat, the more you want."
In 1908, Jack Norworth wrote the song, Take Me Out To The Ball Game, and with the line, "Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks" immortalized the popcorn snack. You've probably sung that song at the ballgame, yourself!
In 1910, coupons were included in the boxes of Cracker Jacks so children could redeem for prizes. Two years later the company started actually putting little prizes (miniature books, magnifying glasses, tiny pitchers, metal trains, etc.) into the boxes. The company slogan was "a prize-in-every-package."
In 1918 the picture of a little sailor boy and dog appeared on the Cracker Jacks box. This was in honor of Fred Ruekheim's grandson, Robert, who died of pneumonia at the age of eight. He appeared on the box with his dog, Bingo. In 1919, they became registered trademark logos.
If you'd like to try your hand at it, you can make your own caramel corn. Visit this website (http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-make-caramel-popcorn) for some great recipes and tips on making the perfect caramel corn.
Knowing a little bit about things we take for granted brings a new appreciation for them. Of course, people are far more important than "things." I encourage you to take the time this week to let those you appreciate know how grateful you are for them. As my mother always told me, it's never too late to say thank you! (And why not make some caramel corn to celebrate!)

Someone Belives In You
I tell you often that your life will be whatever you decide to make it. Has that sunk in, or is your brain still spewing out every reason why it isn't true for you? Do you think I can't possibly know who you really are. I can't possibly know what kind of obstacles you face. I can't possibly know what your life is really like?
Let me share a story with you.
Kemmons Wilson had it tough growing up. His father died when he was nine months old. His young mother, only 18 years old struggled to provide for her son. There were times there was so little money that they lived on a few pounds of dried butter beans for a week at a time.
What got him through those times was his mother's love. Every night she sat her little boy on her lap and said, "You are designed for greatness and you can do anything in life if you're willing to work hard enough to get it."
At 14 years old, Kemmons was hit by a car. The doctors said he would never walk again. He chose to believe differently. He could do anything if he was willing to work hard enough. One year later, he returned to school - walking on his own.
Then the Great Depression hit. His Mom lost her job along with millions of others. He made the decision to quit school and provide for the woman who had done so much for him. The day he quit school, he made it his mission in life to succeed. He vowed to never be poor again.
He experienced varying levels of success over the years but he had not achieved his goal of financial success when he took his wife and kids on a vacation in 1951. He was frustrated by the shoddy accommodations available for families, and furious they dared to charge $2 extra per child. He knew it was too expensive.
His frustrating experience sparked an idea.
He would offer an alternative - a hotel people could trust that would never charge extra for children. It was a completely new concept and most people predicted failure from the beginning.
Kemmons chose to believe differently. As with any business, he experienced enormous challenges. Money was short. Many times payment was an IOU. He had to overcome one obstacle after another - choosing to believe in his success every single day.
15 years later, Holiday Inn was the largest hotel system in the world, with one of the most recognizable names in the business.
Kemmons had a belief that carried him through. "You may not have started life in the best of circumstances. But if you can find a mission in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you from achieving success."
Every generation always believes all the great ideas have already been taken. There is nothing left for you. Ridiculous! Your world is brimming with possibilities. Your job is to keep your mind and heart open. Find and identify that which fills a need and ignites your passion.
Where you are in life today is not what is important. What's important is where you plan to be tomorrow; next year; 10 years from now. Kemmons Wilson had someone who believed in him.
SO DO YOU!!
Mentor those who DESERVE it... not those who DESIRE it....
The ultimate goal of a sponsor is to create a success machine that doesn't quit. The only way to accomplish this is to select a 4-5 people in your group to mentor for greatness. People should be chosen based on their past history of stepping up to the bat and proving they are SERIOUS about building their business. A sponsor needs to make sure these people have shown that they are worthy to being taken under his wing and and having his attention focused on their business.
Sponsors who take these people under their wing for a year and work to solidify and grow them into greatness will ultimately create an extraordinary relationship that will last a lifetime as well as a solid organization. This does not mean that the Sponsor should build it for them, as there are some things they must learn from experience. It simply means totally supporting them in all phases of their business and growth through training, building, supporting, and BEING THERE for them.
Mentoring is not for the weak-hearted, it takes effort, discipline, a lot of caring and also a ton of giving on the Sponsors part.
A Sponsor will have trying times, just like in any relationship, but they must understand that if they mentor a select few folks, they can create an enormous business, and will be maximized in this industry. And these select few will stay with them during the tough times (and there are always those).

Someone Belives In You
It's early in the morning and I have something I want to share with you. I've thought about this through the week, as well as laying in my bed this morning listening to the birds usher in the day as the sun lightened the horizon.
Many years ago a movement swept through America. The call went out to all who had the courage and vision to "Head West". What a picture was drawn for them... The West is where you want to be. There is land for everyone - for the taking! Beautiful. Fertile. Opportunity for everyone. Don't miss your opportunity to be one of the first to stake your claim!
The call went out and hordes signed up to join the wagon trains pulling out of Independence, Missouri. As the pioneers bought supplies and lined up their wagons, their eyes shone with the excitement of what would be waiting at the end of the trail. I think it fair to say not one of them had a real understanding of what lay between Missouri and the far west they envisioned in their dreams.
Can't you hear the conversation....?
"Why, honey," one confident husband says to his rather nervous wife, "There isn't going to be anything to this. We've got a nice, sturdy wagon. We're all together, and we have plenty of food. We're just going to roll along the trail for a while and soon we'll have everything we've dreamed of. Just think of it!"
I don't know how long before the starry looks faded from their eyes - somewhere between broken wagon wheels and Indian attacks. Maybe it was the weevils in the flour, or the snowstorm that left them stranded in the mountains for months on end. Perhaps it was losing a child to illness because there were not enough medical supplies, or simply the fatigue that came from fighting dust, heat and long days of the grueling cruelness of the trail.
Every pioneer who started down the trail, if they didn't die, had one of three things happen. Some gave up and turned back. Others decided they couldn't take any more and simply built a house where they stopped. Then there were the others... the ones who made it all the way to the West.
Yes, somewhere along the way the starry look faded from their eyes...... faded.... to be replaced by determination. Broken wagon wheels; Indian attacks; weevils; snowstorms; death; fatigue; choking dust and long days. They all became daily obstacles to be endured and overcome, but at some point each person who made it simply decided nothing was going to stop them. They had left behind their former lives to go someplace new. They were going.

So what about you? Do you have a dream? Do you have something you've started, but then turned back because it seemed so hard? Or maybe you're still on the trail, wondering which obstacle will be the one to destroy what you've worked so hard for.
Maybe you're just looking at the trail, thinking, "No way. Not me. That just looks too hard." Yet your heart yearns to go where the trail will take you.
__________________, you have a choice to make every single day. You can stay right where you are, or you can go on an adventure to accomplish what you dream of accomplishing. Not going may seem safer, but the truth is that not going will only assure you stay right where you are in your life.
What do you want? Where do you want to go? The only way to get there is to start your journey - then determine to not let anything stop you.
You can do it!
